Chicago Antiques Market Highlight: 29 Palms – The Collectors Oasis

April 25, 2010 at 1:43 pm (Affordable, Cocktail, Formal, Luxury, Uncategorized)

The Chicago Antiques Market is a year round market. The admission price at the door is $10 but you can save a couple of bucks if you prepurchase your ticket online. If you plan to attend frequently, then get the season pass for $100.

My favorite vendors are Robby Davison & Frank Barcellos of 29 Palms: The Collectors Oasis located in Rockford, IL. Their collection focuses on a variety of vintage goods mixed with some new items from North American designers. And, with a tag line that reads “Specializing in 20th Century Décor”, you will definitely walk away with something worthwhile from these gentlemen.

The items shown below are a very small part of their collection. If you want to see more or can’t make it to the market then you can schedule a private viewing in their Rockford, IL showroom by contacting them directly at frankrob53@yahoo.com.

New Custom Ivory Cuff w/Gold & Diamond Inlay

New Black Lacquer Cuff w/Amber Stone and Gold & Diamond Leaf Detail

These two cuffs are items made by a designer in Florida. The ivory cuff with gold & diamond inlay resembles a vintage Chanel cuff and that may be her inspiration. The second cuff with the large amber stone and gold & diamond leaf detail is equally desireable and well crafted. Each item was approximately $450.  But, it’s well worth the OTTL (over the top luxe) feel of each piece.

Vintage Judith Leiber Belt

This vintage belt was at the same table as the cuff above. It’s Judith Leiber and I think that’s all I really need to say. $400.

Gold Necklace & Bracelet

This is also from the same vendor. I was unable to get more info because I was power browsing that day. But the Cartier Panthere necklace keeps coming to mind.

This is just an extremely quick summary & 1% of what this market has to offer. It’s worth a visit. It’s worth $10 (or even $100). The vendors are willing to negotiate. So, carve out 2 or 3 hours in your day on Saturday or Sunday for this market. It’s a treasure trove.

Holiday Jacket 101: The Extreme Basics

Holiday Jacket: Fit Guide

Velvet w/Satin Trim Single Button Jacket $29.80 @ Forever21

Holiday Jacket: Fit Guide

Wool Blend Single Button Tux $32.80 @ Forever21

This post is focusing on the jacket and how to fit it to my body. I have a slight waist with a belly so I need something that adds definition and disguises my tummy. A single breasted jacket with shape detailing, such as princess seams, can be a life saver. Yeah, I haven’t been as dedicated to working out since the baby.  And, I am on the type of  restricted budget you only find in Orwell novels. Yet, I digress.

I am going to try and make this as short, sweet, & as succint as possible. It’s the holidays and I understand that you may not have a lot of time to dawdle. I have this amazing sequin dress I want to wear to a party. A dress is only a dress (even a sequin one) if it isn’t styled properly. Don’t depend on the sequins to ferret you into the highly stylish category in one fell swoop. So, I decided to add a jacket (preferably of a tux style), some light jewelry (since the dress shines enough on its own), a clutch, & shoes.

Feel free to send some feedback or ask questions. I will be more than happy to help you find that piece to put you at the stop of the impressively styled list.

Poised Contour: Azzaro

July 20, 2009 at 9:23 pm (Cocktail, Formal, RTW) (, , , , )

The label was established in Paris in 1962 by Tunisian born Loris Azzaro and has been well known amongst the French elite for the bold cut-outs & ornate beading of its pieces. In todays garment marketplace vintage Azzaro is highly coveted (1). Current Creative Director, Vanessa Seward, has kept the Fall 2009 collection true to its roots with this black silk jumpsuit with bishop sleeves and cut out detail at the neckline (2). Add an equally bold cocktail ring and some sparkle to your ears for that J. Lo worthy – entourage inclusive – entrance to any event!

Convincing Coquetry: Alvin Valley

July 17, 2009 at 3:48 am (Cocktail, Luxury, Miami, New York) (, , , , , , , , , )

Cuban-American designer Alvin Valley has been known as the King of Pants because of his famed fit and celebrated style (1). Subsequently, I have to appoint him King of Romance for his refined execution of a soft feminine silhouette as seen in his collection for Fall 2009. This dress with a pleated V shaped neckline is perfect for a cocktail party (2). Add some sparkle to your wrist & ears to draw all of the attention in your direction.
